Lathe tool holders securely hold carbide inserts for a variety of lathe operations such as turning, boring, facing, grooving, threading, and parting. Indexable turning tool holders are fitted with ISO standard turning inserts, while grooving and threading tool holders use either Top Notch, laydown triangle, on-edge triangle, or proprietary grooving inserts.

CNC turning tool holders are designed to hold either negative or positive inserts. Indexable ISO standard turning inserts with no clearance angle are negative inserts, and those with a clearance angle are positive inserts. Negative inserts are inherently stronger and have more cutting edges compared to positive inserts. Positive inserts are better for cutting aluminum, other non-ferrous materials, and low carbon steels. Turning tool holders for negative inserts have a 5 degree tilt to provide clearance that prevents rubbing on the workpiece. Tool holders for positive inserts have a 0 degree tilt, because the clearance angle is built into the insert. This means that positive insert lathe holders require less horsepower and can be used with smaller machines.

There are several mechanisms by which indexable carbide inserts can be mounted to a lathe tool holder. The screwdown locking style tool holder secures the insert with a countersunk screw through the hole of the insert and threaded into the tool holder pocket. Screwdown locking tool holders are primarily for positive style inserts. The clamp locking style tool holder secures an insert using a clamp that squeezes the insert in the pocket. The clamp is fastened to the tool holder with a machine screw. Clamp locking tool holders are primarily for TPG inserts. The multilock style tool holder is a combination of the screwdown style and clamp locking style. The insert is held in the pocket with both a lock pin screw through its cylindrical hole and a clamp squeezing its face. Multilock tool holders are primarily for negative style inserts. The wedge lock clamping style tool holder secures the insert with a specialized clamp that goes through the hole of the insert. The clamp is fastened to the tool holder with a machine screw. The advantage of the wedge lock clamping style is that it only takes a single action to index the insert, whereas the multilock style requires the loosening of both the lock pin and the clamp. This minimizes downtime. Wedge lock clamping tool holders are primarily for negative style inserts.

Lathe tool holder sizes range from 3/8 inch to 2 inches. At Carbide Depot we offer tool holders with the following shank sizes: 3/8”, 1/2", 5/8”, 3/4", 1”, 1-1/4”, 1-1/2”, and 2”.

Grooving, threading, and parting tool holders use specialized inserts and have proprietary mounting mechanisms. Carbide Depot offers these Iscar tool holder styles: Cut-grip, Do-grip, Heli-face, Heli-grip, Pentacut, Self-grip, Top-grip, and SEL/SER laydown triangle holders. We also offer these Kennametal tool holder styles: A2, A3, A4, Top notch, and LSA/LSS laydown triangle holders.
