William McKnight - Founder and President of
The largest online supplier of carbide cutting tools

William McKnight of Birmingham, Alabama, received his B.S. in business administration from the University of Alabama in 1982, and an MBA from Samford University in 1985. He worked in the energy and investment industries before beginning a career in cutting tools in 1989. He initially worked as an outside sales representative for Max Tool of Birmingham, Alabama, then developed the CD software technical guides PerfectTurn and PerfectMill, which he sold to VerticalNet in 1999.

The idea for Carbide Depot started back in 1997, as an Internet site where unused surplus carbide inserts could be sold. William's 12 year background in cutting tool sales combined with his Internet experience at dot-com darling VerticalNet gave him the perfect experience to bring this idea to fruition. Partnering with Max Tool founder Dudley Barton, William built a database of surplus tooling for potential customers to browse through and find bargains. For four years Carbide Depot saved customers literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, while supplying well over a million unused carbide inserts at huge surplus price savings.

In 2001, Willilam McKnight and Dudley Barton began securing lines to represent many of industry's most reputable carbide tooling manufacturers for Carbide Depot. No longer just a site for surplus tooling, Carbide Depot began to add more and more lines: Kennametal, Iscar, Mitsubishi, Tungaloy, Kyocera, SGS, Garr Tool, Walter, Tool-Flo, Allied Machine, OSG. Eventually we became the industry's largest online supplier.

William McKnight currently serves as president and CEO, but also plays an integral part in Web development and marketing.
